The Art of Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice!

Came home this morning form my labor intensive job at Target and began my nightly ritual. This usually consist of turning the fire on, eating something high in carbs that I swore on the way home I would not eat and watching a show previously recorded. I choose to watch these shows while everyone else is asleep so I can watch them interruption free. These kinds of shows like, The Bachelor, Housewives of New York, Atlanta, Orange County, Beverly Hills or New Jersey need the viewers undivided attention! lol Now that I have "outed" myself on the trashy shows that I watch, I will get on with my morning....

Once in awhile I try and cook a good healthy breakfast for my kids. I usually get in the habit for a few weeks and then they never see it again for about two weeks. It usually surfaces when I start feeling guilty about the empty stomachs that my boys walk out the door with. I can usually get them to whip up a protein shake, or have a bowl of cereal, but if we are out of milk all of a sudden they are breakfast challenged and don't know what to make.

This morning I decided to make "freshly squeezed orange juice" TA DA!!! OK let's be honest...the only reason for making the juice was the oranges were on the breaking point of going bad. I juiced them so I didn't feel guilty throwing away oranges.

Now the funny thing about Orange Juice is that I start gathering all of these oranges on the counter....lots of them.....like I'm making enough to serve all of market Street Grill for Brunch! (There juice is so yummers!) Anyways I start with 5 then 9 then 13 then 16 and while I'm gathering all of these I am thinking, "Oh this is going to be so good and healthy and the boys are going to think I am just all that, and they will be so healthy and do well on there test and tell all their friends what an awesome Mom I am and......
So I start cutting the oranges and now my kitchen is starting to smell like the kitchen of "Mother of The Year", and I get my fancy juicer thing-a-ma-gig out and start to juice!

Now.....16 oranges when I got them out didn't seam like a whole lot! But when you cut them in half??? IT'S FREAKIN 32! So I start looking at all of these halfs and think, "Oh come on this won't take very long!" The most rewarding part of the juice making is when you are juicing away, juice is splattering everywhere, you have juicers elbow....That is where more juice is running down your elbow than in your cup.....AND THEN.....You look down in the juice catcher and there litterally is enough juice for each of your children to have a sip! Like the little cups on Sunday sip! At that point you want to throw the other orange halfs out the window, drink the 1 and 1/2 gulps of juice, clean up and evedence that you made juice and pretend the whole thing never happened.

(Side note...once I made a whole thing of juice and when I tried to lift the container out of the juicer I dumped the whole thing onto the floor! At that point I wanted to get on all fours and start sipping it off the floor like in the movies when people have been walking in the dessert for days and then they finally find water! :) Dang that made me mad!)

Being the survivor that I am.....I continue with orange half #28, orange half #30, and then I'm done! It's really not fair when your all done because there is so little juice that you feel GUILTY for taking one sip! That's one sip away form one of your kids! So I fill the cups up equally and place Hunter's by the warm pancakes that I made him! HA you thought it was just the juice? Ya I made pancakes to BABY!!! :) Hunter walks in and sits down as if this is a morning ritual. I pipe up and say, (with my wet hair, no makeup, yellow V-neck and no bra on), I MADE ORANGE JUICE!!! At least he had enough class to say thank you....only because a Mom in tears just doesn't make for a great start to your day at 13! So I go about my whatever it is that I do at 6:00 am and wait until he is done. As he walks out the door he thanks me and I am feeling like I just changed the whole outcome of his day just by that FRESHLY SQUEEZED OJ!

.....As I go into the kitchen to clean up and get ready for the next child to waddle in THERE IT IS!!! Hunter's cup of orange juice with 1/4 of the juice left! I know 1/4 isn't very much, but out of 32 halves IT'S A LOT! ...It only got worse with child #2....he left 1/2. Does nobody appreciate the goodness of freshly squeezed orange juice around here? ...You know boys, If you bomb that test today it's all on you....I did all that I could do as a mother! .....The funny part of it all is when Brooks wakes up she will drink all of hers and ask for more! lol .....Ahhh Good morning my wonderful kids! lol
